We are deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Stacey Okyere, a 16-year-old student at Aburi Girls Senior High School. The circumstances surrounding her death have prompted fresh investigations, as her parents have raised concerns about the delay and alleged negligence on the part of the school's management.

It is crucial that a thorough investigation is conducted to ascertain the events leading to Stacey's passing. The Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Kwame Acheampong, has rightly called for the involvement of law enforcement agencies, specifically the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ghana Police Service, to look into the matter. Additionally, the Ghana Education Service has been urged to utilize its mechanisms for investigating such incidents.

Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and the Regional Education Director have refrained from commenting on the issue until the investigations are complete, demonstrating a commitment to obtaining a comprehensive understanding of the situation.

The tragic incident has sparked discussions about the duty of care for students in boarding schools and the protocols governing their treatment. In response, Member of Parliament’s Health Committee, Alexander Hottordze, has advocated for standardized health protocols across senior high schools in the country to ensure the well-being of students.

Furthermore, Kofi Asare, the Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, has suggested the implementation of a policy on health and safety in senior high schools, along with clear protocols for the establishment and management of sick bays or infirmaries. These measures aim to prevent situations where a child in need of medical attention is not promptly attended to.

As we await the results of the autopsy, which are expected next week, our thoughts are with Stacey's family during this difficult time. It is our hope that the investigations will provide clarity and contribute to preventing similar incidents in the future.

The loss of a young life is always a tragedy, and it is essential that we learn from this heartbreaking event to ensure the safety and well-being of all students in our educational institutions.
