The recent events in Kwahu Bepong have caused a stir, leading to the arrest of 37 suspects by the Ghana Police Service. The suspects were brought before the Nkawkaw district court, presided over by His Worship Isaac Adjei, and have been remanded to reappear on Friday, February 23, 2024.
These arrests are in connection with the disturbing attacks on the Bepong Chiefs palace and some police officers in the Eastern Region. The initial arrest involved 25 individuals, with an additional 12 suspects being apprehended later in connection with the same incident.
The attacks, which took place on February 4, 2024, resulted in injuries to seven individuals, including five police officers. Tragically, two individuals lost their lives allegedly due to stray bullets fired by the police during the tumultuous events.
The root of these tragic events can be traced back to the alleged actions of a 23-year-old individual named Kwasi Tenkorang. It is reported that Tenkorang, an ex-convict, was accused of the rape and murder of a 45-year-old woman named Akua Kyerewaa. Additionally, a 65-year-old man, Kwasi Antwi, lost his life while attempting to rescue his sister during the heinous act.
Following the arrest of Tenkorang at the chief’s palace, community members demanded his immediate release for what they perceived as instant justice. This led to a violent confrontation between the community members and the police, resulting in further tragic outcomes.
The situation is undoubtedly distressing and calls for a thorough investigation to bring all those responsible to justice. It is crucial for all parties involved to cooperate with the authorities to ensure that the truth is uncovered and appropriate actions are taken.
As we await further developments in this case, our thoughts are with the affected individuals and their families. It is our hope that justice will prevail, and measures will be put in place to prevent such events from occurring in the future.
