In light of recent tragic incidents at several senior high schools in Ghana, the People’s National Convention (PNC) has called for decisive action to be taken. The PNC has urged the Ministry of Education to interdict the heads of the affected schools in order to conduct thorough investigations into the circumstances surrounding the loss of students.

The PNC emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in this process, urging the Ministry of Education to make public the results of their investigation and outline the disciplinary actions to be taken against those responsible. This, they believe, is crucial in preventing similar incidents from occurring in the future.

Specifically, the PNC identified Aburi Girls’ SHS, Akim Swedru SHS, and Kalpohin SHS as the schools affected by these tragic events. They expressed concern over reports suggesting that the deaths were a result of negligence, calling for immediate action to address this issue.

While acknowledging the Ministry of Education’s efforts in implementing the Free SHS Programme to ensure access to secondary education for all, the PNC stressed the need for temporary removal of the school principals attended by the deceased students until a thorough investigation is conducted. They emphasized that an ineffective head of a secondary school not only jeopardizes the quality of education but also puts the well-being and safety of students at risk.

Furthermore, the PNC advocated for all secondary schools to have trained medical staff, at least a nurse, on campus to handle any health emergencies and to refer serious cases to nearby hospitals. They also expressed their intention to implement a policy in their future government to hold the heads of second cycle institutions and supervisors accountable and punish them for cases of negligence.

This call for action comes as a response to the recent tragedies and reflects the PNC’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of students in senior high schools. It is a reminder of the importance of effective leadership and accountability in educational institutions.

The PNC’s stance serves as a call to action for all stakeholders in the education sector to prioritize the safety and welfare of students. It is a reminder that negligence in any form cannot be tolerated, especially when it comes to the lives of young individuals seeking an education.

As we await further developments in this matter, it is imperative that all necessary measures are taken to address the concerns raised by the PNC and to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. Our thoughts remain with the families and loved ones of the students who have been lost, and we hope that swift and appropriate action will be taken to prevent such tragedies from happening again.
