In a significant effort to eradicate ghost names from the public sector, the Controller and Accountant General, Mr. Kwasi Kwaning-Bosompem, has issued a stern warning to employees that his department is poised to remove the names of individuals who have not linked their Ghana card to the payroll system.

Addressing attendees at the annual conference of the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department in Kumasi, Mr. Kwaning-Bosompem underscored the importance of implementing innovative methods to manage public finances in daily operations, thereby ensuring a credible payroll system.

"We have been in communication with our payroll members regarding the linking of their NIA number to the payroll database, a process which commenced two years ago. The implementation of this requirement is now in effect. If you do not possess an NIA card, your salary will soon be discontinued," he emphasized.

He further clarified that even if an individual's NIA card is missing, their number remains on the database, allowing for verification. In cases of uncertainty, individuals will be requested to undergo a physical validation process.

The Executive Director of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), COP Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, stressed the necessity for collaborative efforts in the fight against corruption.

"I have raised concerns because for the past 4 years, the Corruption Perception Index has remained stagnant. It appears that we are neither progressing nor regressing. Despite numerous interventions being implemented, there is a need for further action to enhance the perception of corruption. Everyone must play a role, not just those in positions of authority. If you witness something unethical, it is imperative to report it. It is crucial for everyone to be actively involved and not solely rely on anti-corruption institutions," she urged.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah, representing Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, commended the department for its substantial progress and emphasized the significance of technology and innovation within the accounting and finance sector.

The commitment demonstrated by the Controller and Accountant General’s Department, coupled with the collaborative approach advocated by key figures such as COP Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah and the Ashanti Regional Minister, highlights the concerted effort towards ensuring transparency and efficiency within the public sector. This serves as a testament to the ongoing dedication to combatting corruption and enhancing financial management practices for the benefit of Ghana's development.
