We have recently witnessed a disturbing incident at the Racecourse Market in Kumasi, where three individuals were remanded for allegedly attacking fire officers during a fire outbreak. The accused persons, namely Solomon Anaba, Akongoli Adoko, and Lamamia Ishmael, all laborers, have been charged with conspiracy to commit assault on a public officer and assault on a public officer.

During their appearance at the Kwadaso Circuit Court, their pleas were not taken, and the court granted the request of the prosecutor, ASP Jonas Newlove Adjei, to keep the accused in police custody for further investigations. The prosecutor emphasized that the accused persons, being squatters, may interfere with investigations if granted bail.

Presided by His Honour Stephen Kumi, the court remanded the accused persons to reappear on March 26, 2024. This decision comes after the accused individuals allegedly pelted stones at fire fighters who were attempting to control a raging inferno at the market. The attack resulted in one of the fire fighters sustaining an injury from a thrown stone, causing a delay in addressing the fire and leading to the burning of over one hundred metal container shops.

It is disheartening to note that the fire fighters had to struggle for almost 6 hours to bring the fire under control due to the attack. We commend the efforts of the fire fighters from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital fire station and express our sincere hope for the swift recovery of the injured officer.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by our emergency responders and the need for respect and support from the community. We trust that the legal process will ensure justice for the affected fire officers and uphold the rule of law. Our thoughts are with all those impacted by this unfortunate event.
