The recent sentencing of a 24-year-old herbalist, John Awila, also known as Nana Kojo Agbeko, by the Circuit Court in Mankessim, Central Region, has brought closure to a disturbing case of shooting and robbery in the Asuokor area.

Awila, who purported to be a journalist working with Onua TV and Passion TV, was found guilty on three counts related to the incident. His admission of guilt led to a 30-year imprisonment term handed down by Justice Veronique Abena Praba Tetteh.

The case, as presented by the prosecutor, Detective Chief Inspector Alhassan Iddrisu, revealed the harrowing events that transpired on February 9, 2024. The victim, Ishmael Assan, a taxi driver, was hired by the convict to take him to Breman Asikuma. However, the journey took a sinister turn when Awila brandished a pistol, robbed Assan of cash and belongings, and callously shot him in the left ear before fleeing with the victim's vehicle.

The swift action of the police led to Awila's arrest in Breman Brakwa, where he was found in possession of the stolen vehicle, which had been altered in color and had its number plate removed. Subsequent search at Awila's residence uncovered a pistol with live cartridges.

The victim, Assan, endured significant physical harm and was promptly taken for medical treatment, eventually requiring specialized care at Korlebu Teaching Hospital.

The resolution of this case is a testament to the diligence of law enforcement and the justice system in ensuring that perpetrators of violent crimes are held accountable for their actions. The severity of Awila's sentence underscores the gravity of his offenses and serves as a deterrent to others who may contemplate similar criminal acts.

It is imperative that communities remain vigilant and cooperative with law enforcement to prevent such incidents from occurring. The safety and security of individuals going about their daily activities should not be compromised by the actions of those who seek to inflict harm and instill fear.

As this chapter draws to a close, our thoughts are with the victim, Ishmael Assan, as he continues on his path to recovery. May this verdict bring him a sense of justice and closure, and may he find solace in knowing that the perpetrator has been held accountable for his reprehensible actions.
