The trial of Gregory Afoko, accused in the murder of New Patriotic Party’s Upper East Regional Chairman, Adams Mahama, has commenced with the prosecution presenting their case. On April 12, 2024, the Chief State Attorney, Mrs. Marina Appiah-Opare, called the Pathologist, Dr. Lawrence Adusei, as the first of 16 witnesses.
Dr. Adusei, who conducted the autopsy on the late NPP chairman, testified that the cause of death was extensive acid burns from unnatural causes. This marks his third appearance in the matter, and he was discharged after cross-examination by the defense.
The prosecution is set to call their second witness at the next court sitting, with the case adjourned to April 26, 2024.
The brief facts of the case outline a series of events leading up to the tragic incident, including a confrontation between the deceased and the accused, as well as the formation of a youth group allegedly involved in the attack.
The prosecution asserts that on May 20, 2015, the accused ambushed Mahama at his residence and poured a substance suspected to be acid on him, resulting in fatal injuries. Mahama's wife also sustained burns while attempting to assist him.
The subsequent events saw Gregory leading the police to Asabke’s father’s house, while Asabke had absconded with his wife, leaving their baby behind. A post-mortem report confirmed Mahama's cause of death as shocked lungs and extensive acid burns.
As the trial unfolds, it is imperative to allow the legal process to run its course and for all evidence to be thoroughly examined. The pursuit of justice for the late Adams Mahama remains at the forefront of this trial.
The proceedings will continue to unfold as both the prosecution and defense present their respective cases, ultimately seeking a resolution in this tragic and high-profile case.
