In a recent case brought before the Accra Circuit Court, a 54-year-old businessman, Nana Ohene Djan Aggrey Bentil, has been accused of defrauding a car dealer of four luxurious cars worth GH¢1.78 million. The cars in question include a Range Rover Sports 2018 model, Toyota Tundra 2020 model, Maserati, and Range Rover 2018 models.
According to court documents, the accused allegedly impersonated the importers of the cars and fraudulently registered the vehicles at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) office without the consent of the dealer and actual owners. This led to a series of charges including forgery of official documents, defrauding by false pretense, and issuing a false cheque.
During the arraignment on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, the accused pleaded not guilty to the 10 counts brought against him. The defense counsel, Emmanuel Acolatse, made a bail application stating that the accused had a fixed place of abode and was not a flight risk. However, the prosecution opposed the bail application on the grounds that the accused might abscond, citing a previous criminal case as evidence.
The prosecution provided detailed facts of the case, outlining how the accused allegedly obtained the cars under false pretenses and subsequently sold them to third parties. It was revealed that the accused issued post-dated cheques to the complainant and proceeded to fraudulently register and sell the vehicles without consent.
The prosecution further stated that three out of the eight cheques issued by the accused were cleared, resulting in a total amount of GH¢500,000.00 being realized by the complainant.
The judge ordered the prosecutor to furnish the court with details of proceedings from the other court where the accused is facing criminal charges, in order to make an informed decision regarding the bail application.
This case serves as a reminder of the importance of due diligence and verification in high-value transactions, as well as the potential consequences of fraudulent activities. The court proceedings will continue as the legal system seeks to address the allegations brought against the accused individual.
