In response to recent announcements of a proposed 30 percent increase in transport fares by the Transport Operators Union and the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana, the Ghana Private Roads and Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have issued a joint press release urging commuters not to adhere to any new fares that have not received official approval.

The GPRTU and the GRTCC emphasized that any fare hike outside the parameters set by the Administrative Instrument governing the review of public transport fares in the country is considered illegal and should be disregarded. They highlighted the importance of adhering to existing fares until an official decision regarding fare increments has been made.

The decision to raise fares was attributed to the government's failure to address grievances raised by the transport unions. However, both organizations reiterated their commitment to engaging with stakeholders and the Ministry of Transport to thoroughly assess the various cost components and reach a mutually agreeable resolution on the matter.

In their statement, the GPRTU and the GRTCC called upon Regional Administrations, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, and the Station Welfare committees to ensure compliance with existing fares and to disregard any unauthorized fare increments. They also urged drivers to abide by this directive and expressed their ongoing efforts to advocate for the welfare of transport operators.

It is evident that the issue of transport fares in Ghana requires careful consideration and collaboration between all relevant parties. The GPRTU and the GRTCC's stance reflects their dedication to upholding official regulations and working towards a sustainable solution that benefits both commuters and transport operators.

As discussions continue between the involved parties, it is important for commuters to stay informed about official decisions regarding transport fares and to support measures that prioritize the welfare of all stakeholders in the transport industry. The GPRTU and the GRTCC's proactive approach serves as a reminder of the significance of adherence to established regulations in ensuring a fair and transparent system for all.
