In a recent development, state prosecutors are preparing to file a fresh charge sheet against two individuals accused of impersonating Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. This comes after further investigations revealed their involvement in additional offenses, with National Democratic Congress’ Women Organiser Hannah Bissue and Thomas Ampem-Nyarko, Member of Parliament for Asuogyaman, being the latest victims.

The accused individuals, Promise Ahorgah, a phone repairer, and Kwaotse Mawuli, a building construction laborer, allegedly created social media accounts in the name of the North Tongu MP to solicit funds on behalf of victims affected by the Akosombo and Kpong Dam Spillage. They have pleaded not guilty to six counts of allegedly defrauding unsuspecting Ghanaians and have been granted bail.

During a court appearance on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, State Attorney Joyce Yinsoma Tindana informed the court that the office of the Attorney General has received the case docket from the investigator after requesting further investigations. She stated that new charges are being considered in light of extensive investigations and new discoveries, including the impersonation of other public figures such as Hon Thomas Ampem-Nyarko and Hannah Bissue.

The accused individuals were arrested on December 13 by the National Signals Bureau. The charges against them include defrauding by false pretenses, charlatanic advertisement, and falsely pretending to be a public officer.

According to the brief facts of the case, the complainant, who is the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, developed a flyer requesting donations for flood victims in the Volta Region following the Akosombo and Kpong dam spillage.

As the legal proceedings continue, it is evident that the authorities are committed to pursuing justice in this matter. The implications of impersonation and fraudulent activities are serious, and it is crucial for such cases to be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted.

The legal process serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding integrity and accountability, particularly in matters involving public figures and charitable initiatives. The alleged actions of the accused individuals not only undermine trust but also have potential repercussions for genuine relief efforts aimed at assisting those in need.

As the case unfolds, it is imperative for due process to be followed, ensuring that all relevant evidence is considered and that the rights of both the accused and the victims are upheld. The pursuit of justice in this matter reflects the commitment to safeguarding the integrity of public office and protecting individuals from fraudulent schemes.

It is hoped that through the diligent efforts of the authorities and the legal system, clarity and resolution will be achieved in this case. The outcome will serve as a testament to the dedication to upholding the law and ensuring accountability within society.
