We are deeply saddened to report the tragic incident that occurred on Sunday, May 5, in Dambai Lakeside, which resulted in the loss of a young life. Kwaku Sey, a 19-year-old resident of the community, was allegedly shot dead during clashes between the Police and angry youth at Dambai Town Hall, the capital of Eastern Krachi in the Oti region.

According to Francis Gesaloge Boyesah Okoro, a resident of the area, the Police were on night patrol when they attempted to arrest some youths who were reportedly engaging in illicit drug use. It is claimed that the situation escalated when Sey resisted arrest, leading to chaos and the firing of warning shots. Tragically, Sey was struck by a stray bullet and later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

Emmanuel Atali, the Assemblyman for Dambai Lakeside, confirmed the altercation between the Police and the youth. He recounted hearing a gunshot on Sunday evening and discovering Sey lying in a pool of blood. Following official reporting to the Police station, Sey's body was taken to Worawora Hospital for preservation.

The incident understandably caused fear within the community, prompting residents and pedestrians to seek cover. Additionally, two motorcycles belonging to the police officers were reportedly destroyed by some of the enraged youths.

In light of these events, two individuals have been arrested by the Police to assist in their investigations. However, it is notable that both the Divisional and Regional Police Commands have refrained from commenting on the incident when approached by the Ghana News Agency for verification.

This distressing occurrence serves as a stark reminder of the importance of effective communication and conflict resolution within communities. Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Kwaku Sey during this difficult time. We fervently hope that a thorough investigation will provide clarity and understanding regarding the circumstances that led to this tragedy.

As we await further developments in this matter, we urge for calm and cooperation from all parties involved. It is our collective responsibility to work towards fostering a safe and harmonious environment for all members of society.
