The paramount chiefs of the Talensi and Builsa traditional areas have recently taken legal action to address a matter of significance within the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs. Their motion, filed at the Bolgatanga High Court, seeks to halt the swearing-in of Pe Ditundini Adiali Ayagitam III as the president-elect of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs.

The paramount chief of Talensi, Tongraan Kugbilsong-Nanlebegtang, and the paramount chief of the Builsa Traditional Council, Nab Azagsuk Azantilow, are at the forefront of this legal action. They are specifically requesting an interlocutory injunction to prevent Pe Ayagitam from assuming the role of President-elect and participating in any swearing-in ceremony. Additionally, they aim to restrain the registrar of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs from facilitating any such ceremony or inviting a legal officer to swear in Pe Ayagitam.

Central to their argument is the contention that the election of Pe Ayagitam contravenes an agreement established by the House in 2001, which instituted a rotational system for electing the President of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs. They assert that this rotational system was unanimously resolved to continue in 2004, and they cite the election of Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II (Bawku Naba) as the first beneficiary of this arrangement.

The paramount chiefs argue that deviating from this rotational system undermines the peace and unity of the House. Consequently, they are seeking a declaration from the court that the election of Pe Ayagitam is null and void. Their legal submission outlines a series of reliefs they are pursuing, including setting aside the election, restraining Pe Ayagitam from assuming the role of President-elect, and preventing unilateral changes to the rotational system for electing a President.

They emphasize that adherence to the agreed rotational system is vital for upholding unity within the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs. The case is now before the Bolgatanga High Court for resolution.

This legal action underscores the significance of established agreements and systems within traditional institutions. The outcome of this case will undoubtedly have implications for the leadership structure and unity within the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs. As such, it is a matter deserving thorough consideration and resolution within the legal framework.
