We are deeply saddened to report a tragic incident that occurred on the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway near Gbimsi, resulting in the loss of eight lives. The assailants, armed gunmen, blocked the highway and opened fire on unsuspecting travellers, creating a scene of terror and devastation.

Reports indicate that the armed men set up roadblocks in Gbimsi and Walewale Town, where they stopped vehicles and subjected passengers to interrogation, leading to the senseless loss of approximately eight lives. Additionally, two vehicles were set ablaze, further escalating the gravity of the situation and raising significant security concerns.

A survivor shared a harrowing account of the ordeal, highlighting the fear and chaos that ensued during the attack. The absence of a timely security response further compounds the distressing nature of this incident.

This heinous act is believed to be connected to the resurfacing of the Bawku Conflict, reigniting tensions in the region after a period of relative calm. In response to this alarming development, the Ghana Police Service has pledged to bolster security measures along the highway in the days ahead.

In an official statement, the Ghana Police Service assured the public of heightened security presence in Bawku and its environs, as well as along the Bolgatanga–Walewale–Tamale highway. Collaborative efforts between the police and military personnel are being mobilized to restore stability and ensure the safety of travellers.

It is imperative for all stakeholders to remain vigilant and cooperative as the authorities work diligently to address this security threat. The commitment of the security agencies to upholding peace, law, and order in Bawku and its surrounding areas is resolute, and we stand united in condemning such acts of violence.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families and loved ones of the victims, and we fervently hope for swift justice and lasting peace in the affected region.
