The protracted Bawku conflict, a decades-old inter-tribal dispute between the Kusasi and Mamprusi ethnic groups, has experienced a troubling resurgence of violence, casting a shadow over recent mediation efforts that had shown promising progress. President John Dramani Mahama has expressed grave concerns about the timing of these incidents, which he believes are a deliberate attempt to derail ongoing peace negotiations.

 Fatal Attacks Undermine Mediation Progress

The renewed violence comes at a critical juncture in the peace process, with significant breakthroughs reportedly achieved under the mediation of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. Fatal incidents, including the killing of a Kusasi chief in the Ashanti Region and the tragic shooting of students at Nalerigu Senior High School, have created an atmosphere of fear and instability in the Upper East Region.

During a courtesy visit by the Gonja King, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, at Jubilee House, President Mahama lamented the deliberate nature of these attacks. "We have given the mediation to Otumfuo, and he has constantly briefed me on the mediation efforts that we are almost there. So, the current fighting and killing can only be done by people who want to derail the mediation efforts," he stated.

 Government's Escalated Security Measures

In response to the alarming situation, the government has transitioned its security strategy in Bawku from peacekeeping to active peace enforcement. President Mahama announced that he had directed the Ghana Armed Forces to intensify operations in the area, including stricter curfew enforcement and proactive measures to restore order.

"We cannot accept the current situation in Bawku, where students are shot in school and killed. We cannot accept the situation where teachers and workers have run away for their lives," the President declared.

A subsequent statement from Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, reinforced the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property. It warned that security forces would "take all necessary measures" to stabilize the area and prevent further bloodshed.

Mediation Efforts: A Glimmer of Hope

Despite the challenges, recent mediation efforts led by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II have been widely praised for their near-successful resolution of the conflict. Collaborative discussions between traditional leaders, including the Nayiri of Mamprugu, Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, and Zugraana (the Kusasi Chief), had brought hope for a lasting solution.

President Mahama commended the Nayiri for his statesmanship and willingness to make concessions in pursuit of peace. "I was with His Royal Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, two days ago, and he briefed me on the cooperation you have given him in finding a final traditional solution to the conflict," he said during a meeting with a delegation from Mamprugu.

 Historical Context and Impact

The Bawku chieftaincy crisis traces its roots to colonial-era disputes over traditional authority. While intermittent peace has been achieved over the years, recurrent violence has displaced thousands and disrupted socio-economic activities in the region.

Recent months had seen hopeful progress in restoring stability, but fresh killings have reignited fears of prolonged unrest. The government’s decision to escalate its security strategy underscores its resolve to end this cycle of violence and protect vulnerable communities.

A Call for Unity and Action

During his visit to Jubilee House, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I emphasized the importance of peace as a foundation for development. "As you travel the length and breadth of our nation to fulfil your social contract with Ghanaians, peace is a cherished commodity for all Ghanaians, and development thrives where peace reigns," he remarked.

The Gonja King also appealed to President Mahama to address illegal mining activities—commonly referred to as "galamsey"—that threaten Ghana’s natural heritage. He urged bold and decisive measures to curb this scourge while engaging local communities in sustainable solutions.

 Conclusion

The renewed violence in Bawku is a sobering reminder of the complexities involved in resolving deeply rooted conflicts. While recent mediation efforts have shown promise, deliberate acts of violence threaten to unravel years of progress. The government’s intensified security measures and continued collaboration with traditional leaders offer hope for restoring stability.

As Ghana navigates this challenging period, it is imperative that all stakeholders remain committed to fostering dialogue, promoting unity, and prioritizing peace as a cornerstone for national development. Only through collective efforts can lasting solutions be achieved for the people of Bawku and beyond.
