In a distressing turn of events, armed robbers launched an attack on the Buipe-Tamale highway on July 21, 2025. Among the victims of this brazen act was the Upper East Regional representative on the Council of State, Pe Ditundini Adiali Ayagitam III, also known as the Chiana-Pio. The incident unfolded at Mile 40 near Fufulso, leaving travelers shaken and highlighting the growing security challenges on some of Ghana's major roadways.

 The Incident

According to a Police Situation Report, the Buipe Highway Patrol Team received an alert about an ongoing robbery on the highway. Officers promptly responded to the scene, leading to an exchange of gunfire with the perpetrators. Despite their efforts, the robbers managed to flee before law enforcement could apprehend them.

The Chiana-Pio, accompanied by his bodyguard, G/L/Cpl. Lugubamang Issah Sumaila, and his driver, Jacob Apanyina, was traveling in a Toyota Prado with registration number GM 5645-12. The group was en route from Tamale to Kumasi after attending the Northern Development Conference. Their journey took a dangerous turn when they encountered approximately fifteen armed men, some of whom were masked and believed to be of Fulani extraction. These assailants had blocked the road and were firing indiscriminately.

The Bodyguard’s Account

G/L/Cpl. Lugubamang Issah Sumaila, who was armed with a sidearm and a CZ rifle, initially returned fire in an attempt to protect his group. However, his sidearm malfunctioned during the confrontation. To avoid imminent danger and to fix his weapon, he sought cover in a nearby bush. Unfortunately, this left the vehicle and its occupants vulnerable to the attackers.

Upon returning to the scene after resolving the malfunction, the bodyguard discovered that the robbers had fled with his CZ rifle (No. CZ 807D418863) and iPhone 13. The Council of State representative was also robbed of several personal belongings, including an iPhone 11, a Samsung mobile phone, $200 (USD), CFA 3,000, GH¢41,000.00 in cash, a smart wristwatch, a pair of reading glasses, a Lenovo laptop, and a hat. Meanwhile, the driver lost his iPhone 11 and GH¢800 in cash.

 Evidence Recovered

A subsequent search of the scene revealed critical evidence that may aid in investigations. Law enforcement recovered three spent BBB cartridges and fifteen spent AK-47 ammunition shells, underscoring the level of firepower employed by the robbers.

 Implications and Concerns

This incident raises significant concerns about road safety and security for travelers in Ghana. The Buipe-Tamale highway is a vital route connecting various regions of the country, and such violent attacks not only endanger lives but also disrupt economic activities. The involvement of high-profile individuals like members of the Council of State further underscores the audacity of these criminal elements.

Call for Action

The authorities must intensify efforts to ensure the safety of travelers on major highways. This includes increasing police patrols, deploying advanced surveillance systems, and addressing broader issues such as illegal arms proliferation and organized crime networks.

For now, investigations into this incident are ongoing as law enforcement agencies work tirelessly to bring the perpetrators to justice. It is hoped that swift action will be taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future and restore public confidence in road safety across Ghana.

 Conclusion

The attack on July 21 serves as a grim reminder of the security challenges facing travelers in parts of Ghana. While no lives were lost in this particular incident, the psychological impact and material losses suffered by the victims are significant. It is imperative for all stakeholders—government agencies, law enforcement, and community leaders—to collaborate in creating safer roads for all citizens.
