In a bid to address the ongoing security challenges in the Upper East Region, the Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has announced a revision of curfew hours for Bawku Municipality and its surrounding areas. This decision, informed by the National Security Council and enacted through an Executive Instrument, was detailed in a press release dated July 30, 2025.

Effective Thursday, July 31, 2025, residents in Bawku Municipality will observe curfew hours from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am. This measure comes as part of the government’s broader strategy to curb violence and restore stability to the region following renewed unrest.

The press release emphasized the importance of restraint and peaceful resolution during these challenging times, urging Chiefs, Elders, Opinion Leaders, Youth, and residents to channel their efforts into fostering peace through non-violent means. The government remains committed to ensuring security and stability in the area and has called on all stakeholders to cooperate in this endeavor.

Additionally, a total ban has been placed on the possession of arms, ammunition, or offensive weapons within the municipality and its environs. Authorities have issued a stern warning that any individual found in violation of this directive will face arrest and prosecution.

The curfew and accompanying restrictions have been necessitated by fresh outbreaks of violence in Bawku. In response to the escalating situation, the Ghana Armed Forces has taken decisive action to enforce peace in the region. A deployment of four hundred troops is underway as part of the government’s initiative to stabilize the area and prevent further unrest.

During a one-day working visit to the Upper East Region on June 27, Chief of Army Staff Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu provided updates on the military’s operations. He stated that the army has successfully brought recent violence in Bawku and Binduri under control and continues to carry out peacekeeping and stabilization missions in affected areas.

The government remains steadfast in its commitment to restoring normalcy in Bawku Municipality. Residents are encouraged to adhere strictly to curfew regulations and cooperate with security personnel as efforts to restore peace unfold. As authorities work tirelessly to address these challenges, maintaining calm and prioritizing dialogue will be crucial for achieving lasting harmony in the region.

This latest development underscores the government's resolve to ensure safety and security for all citizens while fostering an environment conducive to peacebuilding.
