In a significant breakthrough, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has successfully apprehended Abubakar Sadick, a fugitive convict implicated in a series of car robberies across Ghana. The arrest marks a pivotal moment in the fight against organized crime and underscores the importance of coordinated intelligence and law enforcement efforts.

The Modus Operandi of the Syndicate

Abubakar Sadick, along with his alleged accomplices, is accused of orchestrating car thefts under the guise of operating as members of a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) or religious group. These individuals reportedly approached car rental companies with fabricated intentions of using vehicles for missions in Northern Ghana. Once in possession of the vehicles, they would lure unsuspecting drivers to secluded areas, where they would rob them and abscond with the cars.

Commissioner of Police (COP) Lydia Yaako Donkor, Director General of CID, revealed chilling details during a joint press conference held on Monday by the Ghana Police Service and the Cyber Security Authority (CSA). COP Donkor recounted one such incident where Abubakar rented a Toyota Land Cruiser, tied the driver to a tree near Malzeri close to Yendi, and stole the vehicle. A similar theft occurred in January 2023 under the same pretext.

A Long Trail of Crimes

Abubakar Sadick has been on the radar of law enforcement agencies since November 2022. In April 2023, he allegedly stole a Toyota Vitz, which was later sold in Bolgatanga. Following sustained investigations and intelligence gathering, police identified him as the key suspect and issued warrants for his arrest. He was subsequently placed on the police wanted list, immigration stop list, and an Interpol red notice.

The fugitive’s evasion skills were evident when he was arrested by the Burkina Faso Police in February 2023 but managed to escape before extradition proceedings could be completed. However, his luck ran out on July 28, 2025, when he was finally apprehended in Accra during a joint operation involving the CID’s Anti-Armed Robbery Unit and National Security.

Convict on the Run

COP Donkor disclosed that Abubakar Sadick had previously been sentenced in absentia by the Cape Coast High Court to 25 years imprisonment with hard labor for a robbery committed in Breman Asikuma in 2021. Despite this conviction, he continued to evade capture while allegedly engaging in further criminal activities.

Investigations have linked him to several other car thefts, and efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend his accomplices. COP Donkor urged car rental operators and victims of similar incidents to report to the CID Headquarters to assist with investigations.

Collaborative Efforts for Enhanced Security

The press conference also highlighted the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies and cybersecurity authorities. Mr. Divine Selase Agbeti, Director General of the Cyber Security Authority, emphasized that this joint operation reflects a shared commitment to ensuring a safer environment for residents and businesses in Ghana. He reiterated the critical role of cybersecurity in addressing modern-day crimes that often have digital components.

Conclusion

The arrest of Abubakar Sadick represents a significant step forward in combating organized crime in Ghana. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance among car rental operators and the general public. As investigations continue, authorities remain resolute in their efforts to bring all perpetrators to justice and ensure the safety and security of citizens.
