In a dramatic turn of events, three men have been arrested by the Savelugu District Police Command for unlawful possession of restricted drugs and a firearm. The suspects — Jabuni S. Mohammed, 29, a businessman; Alidu Abdul Samed, 20, a tailor; and Abdul Aziz, 29, a kente weaver — are all residents of Tamale and are currently in police custody pending legal proceedings.

The arrests were made in the early hours of Sunday, August 3, 2025, along the Tamale-Bolgatanga road near Diare, following a high-speed chase and a coordinated manhunt by law enforcement officers. According to police reports, the incident began when a Nissan Hardbody pick-up truck, driven by Jabuni S. Mohammed, failed to stop at a routine police checkpoint.

Details of the Incident

The vehicle, traveling from Walewale to Tamale, ignored police signals to halt, prompting officers to initiate pursuit. The chase concluded when Mohammed abandoned the vehicle and attempted to flee into nearby bushland. However, through a coordinated search operation, he was apprehended at approximately 2:20 a.m.

A subsequent search of the abandoned vehicle revealed alarming discoveries. Police uncovered 1,399 blisterfoils of Tafrodol 120mg capsules concealed within a deflated spare tire, as well as a CA161M pistol loaded with six rounds of 9mm ammunition hidden inside the vehicle’s headrest.

During initial interrogation, Mohammed admitted that he was acting under the instructions of two other individuals — Alidu Abdul Samed and Abdul Aziz — who had allegedly commissioned him to procure the restricted drugs. Acting on this information, police mounted surveillance operations that led to the arrest of the two additional suspects later that morning. The duo arrived in Diare on an unregistered Lojia motorbike to meet Mohammed but were swiftly apprehended by law enforcement officers.

Further Evidence Uncovered

Mohammed subsequently led investigators to a bush near a stream where he had discarded empty boxes of Tafrodol capsules. The boxes, stuffed into two black poly bags, were retrieved and added to the growing list of evidence.

The items seized during the operation include:

- 1,399 blisterfoils of Tafrodol 120mg capsules

- One CA161M pistol with six rounds of 9mm ammunition

- A Nissan Hardbody pick-up (registration number GN 2812-20)

- One unregistered Lojia motorbike

Legal Implications

The actions of the suspects contravene Section 102 of the Pharmacy Council Act, 2013 (Act 857), which pertains to the possession of restricted drugs without authorization. Additionally, they are in violation of Section 192 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), which prohibits possession of firearms and ammunition without lawful excuse.

The three men are expected to be arraigned before court on Monday, August 4, 2025. Police officials have assured that investigations are ongoing to uncover further details surrounding this case.

A Growing Concern

This incident highlights the growing challenge faced by law enforcement agencies in combating the unlawful possession and distribution of restricted drugs and firearms. The swift action of the Savelugu District Police Command underscores their commitment to ensuring public safety and upholding the rule of law.

As investigations continue, this case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and cooperation between communities and law enforcement in addressing criminal activities. Authorities have urged members of the public to report any suspicious activities that may compromise public safety.
