In a remarkable display of vigilance and professionalism, the Ghana Police Service successfully dismantled a seven-member robbery gang, including a soldier, who posed as National Security operatives to execute their criminal agenda. The gang's audacious attempt to hijack a tanker loaded with 54,000 litres of fuel near Nsawam on the Accra-Kumasi highway was thwarted, leading to their capture and subsequent detention.
The Incident
According to information sourced from deep security channels, Corporal Christian Bortey Bernard of the Training and Doctrine Unit (TRADOC) of the Ghana Armed Forces led the gang in the brazen operation. On the night of August 6, 2025, the assailants intercepted a Bulk Road Vehicle (BRV) with registration number GT 2493-20. Posing as National Security operatives, they demanded to inspect documents covering the fuel consignment, alleging it had been diverted.
Upon receiving the documents, the gang handcuffed the two drivers and forcefully bundled them into a green pickup truck. Despite pleas from the drivers to contact their superior for verification, the robbers ignored their appeals. The gang then split up—one group drove the tanker in the opposite direction while others headed towards Accra in the pickup.
Swift Police Intervention
In the early hours of August 7, 2025, at approximately 12:30 am, officers from the Anyah District Command intercepted the green pickup truck at a snap checkpoint in Ablekuma-Borkorborkor. Two passengers in the open bucket of the pickup jumped off and cried for help, alerting the officers that they had been victims of a robbery earlier that night. They reported that their loaded tanker had been stolen near Nsawam.
The officers immediately acted to rescue the victims. Corporal Bortey Bernard, who was dressed in military uniform and among the occupants of the pickup, attempted to flee but was apprehended after resisting arrest. Meanwhile, other members of the gang sped off in the pickup, abandoning their accomplice.
Further Arrests and Recovery
Following coordinated intelligence efforts, police from the Kibi Divisional Command arrested six suspects at Asiakwa Junction near Bunso. The stolen tanker was recovered at the scene alongside an empty tanker with registration number GN 804-13. A pumping machine used to transfer fuel from one tanker to another and a private VW Golf car with registration number GW 5185-Z were also discovered and suspected to be linked to the gang's operations.
The suspects—Mark Abito, Shaibu Adams, Awini Ibrahim, Muniru Ayeba, Barnabas Atiga, and Abdullah Ganiu—are now in police custody alongside Corporal Bortey Bernard. Investigations are ongoing to dismantle the gang entirely and bring all perpetrators to justice.
Recognition for Exemplary Police Work
In recognition of their diligence and bravery, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno promoted two officers involved in intercepting the robbers. Constable Joseph Akondoh was elevated to Lance Corporal (L/Cpl), while Chief Inspector Patience Kotoka received a recommendation to join the next Police Cadet Course at the Police Academy for commissioning into the Senior Officer Corps.
During a ceremony held at Police Headquarters on August 8, 2025, IGP Yohuno commended both officers and five Community Police Assistants (CPAs) on duty for their exemplary performance. He urged all personnel to emulate their professionalism, vigilance, and dedication to duty. The IGP reaffirmed the Police Administration’s commitment to recognizing and rewarding officers who distinguish themselves in service.
Conclusion
This successful operation underscores the importance of vigilance and coordinated efforts in combating crime. The Ghana Police Service has demonstrated its resolve to protect life and property while maintaining law and order. By swiftly apprehending these criminals and recovering stolen assets, they have not only safeguarded public trust but also set a benchmark for operational excellence.
As investigations continue, this incident serves as a reminder that no one is above the law. The Ghana Police Service remains steadfast in its mission to ensure justice prevails and that those who flout societal norms face appropriate consequences.
