The Ghana Police Service has taken decisive action following a violent clash between two rival youth groups in Sankor, a suburb of Winneba in the Central Region. The altercation, which occurred on Sunday, escalated from an earlier confrontation that had been reported to the police. Despite initial efforts to mediate, tensions flared, culminating in a violent encounter that left the community in a state of fear and panic.
According to reports, members of both factions allegedly wielded offensive weapons and fired gunshots during the incident. This alarming development not only disrupted the peace but also endangered the safety of residents in the area.
In the aftermath of the clash, unverified reports circulated on social media and within the community, suggesting that the violence had resulted in fatalities. However, the Winneba Divisional Commander, ACP Ibrahim Opoku, has categorically refuted these claims. Speaking to Citi News on Tuesday, January 27, ACP Opoku clarified that no deaths were recorded as a result of the incident.
He disclosed that two individuals sustained life-threatening injuries during the violence and are currently receiving medical treatment. One of the injured persons is being cared for at the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba, while the other is receiving treatment at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital. Both individuals remain under police protection as they recover.
“We have made some arrests, and the suspects have been remanded into prison custody. There has been no death, as reported. Some persons were wounded, and they are responding to treatment at various hospitals,” ACP Opoku stated.
The police commander further assured residents that calm has since been restored to Sankor, with law enforcement maintaining a strong presence in the area to prevent any further escalation. Investigations are ongoing as officers work diligently to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the clash. Efforts are also underway to apprehend other suspects believed to have been involved in the violence.
The Ghana Police Service has appealed to residents, particularly the youth, to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement agencies as investigations continue. The authorities have emphasized their commitment to ensuring accountability and have warned that anyone found culpable will face the full force of the law.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for peaceful conflict resolution within communities. The police have reiterated their dedication to maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of all residents in Winneba and its surrounding areas.
