In a significant operation aimed at curbing drug trafficking in the Volta North Region, two individuals have been apprehended by the Volta North Regional Police Command for transporting dried substances suspected to be Indian Hemp. The suspects, identified as Akyereme George, aged 43, and Benjamin Akpado, aged 23, were arrested on Thursday, January 29, 2026.

According to a statement released by Inspector Felix Kwao, the Public Relations Officer of the Volta North Regional Police Command, the suspects were intercepted while traveling in two separate vehicles with registration numbers GE-8254-13 and AW-4321-14 en route to Kpando. The arrest occurred after the suspects attempted to evade the police by speeding into a nearby bush upon spotting a Police Patrol car. However, their escape attempt was promptly thwarted by the officers.

A thorough search of the vehicles revealed 20 sacks containing 680 pieces of dried leaves, neatly packed in white rubber bags. The police suspect the substance to be Indian Hemp, though further testing is expected to confirm its identity.

Inspector Kwao disclosed that the suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting with investigations. Efforts are also underway to identify and apprehend the owners of the contraband substances to ensure they face the full extent of the law.

In his statement, Inspector Kwao reiterated the commitment of the Volta North Regional Police Command to intensify efforts in combating drug trafficking and related criminal activities within the region. He assured the public that such operations would continue as part of their broader strategy to ensure safety and security for all residents.

The arrest serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against illegal drug trade in Ghana. Authorities are urging members of the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities to the police to aid in their efforts to eradicate this menace.

As investigations continue, it is expected that those involved in this illegal activity will be brought to justice, further reinforcing the resolve of law enforcement agencies to maintain law and order in the region.
