In a shocking and deeply disturbing case that has sent ripples of outrage across the nation, the Western Regional Police Command has apprehended two individuals in connection with a viral video showing the physical assault and coercion of two teenagers into a non-consensual sexual act. The victims, a 13-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl, were subjected to this appalling ordeal in Effiakuma, Ghana.
The suspects, identified as Edward Azalekor, 52, an Assemblyman for the Effiakuma West Electoral Area, and Martin Amuzu, 35, the uncle of the female victim, were arrested on Thursday, February 26, 2026. The incident came to light after a presenter from Connect FM submitted a WhatsApp video to the police. The harrowing footage depicted the suspects forcing the minors to engage in sexual intercourse in a shop while onlookers laughed, cheered, and recorded the act.
Details of the Incident
According to preliminary investigations, the female teenager had left her home on the afternoon of February 16, 2026, without informing her mother. She returned later that evening at approximately 7:40 PM. Her mother, upset by her absence and actions, sought the intervention of Edward Azalekor to discipline her daughter.
Rather than addressing the situation appropriately, Azalekor and Amuzu reportedly escalated matters in an alarming manner. The two suspects lured the teenage boy to the scene and forced both minors to engage in sexual activity against their will. This heinous act was captured on video, which subsequently went viral on social media platforms.
Legal Proceedings and Arrests
Following their arrest, Edward Azalekor and Martin Amuzu were arraigned before the Harbor District Court in Takoradi on Friday, February 27, 2026. The court granted each suspect bail set at GHC 20,000. They are scheduled to reappear before the court on Thursday, March 5, 2026.
Meanwhile, the female victim has been placed under the care of the Department of Social Welfare as investigations continue. Authorities are also intensifying efforts to locate and apprehend Isaac Nana Osei, who is alleged to have recorded the incident and is currently evading arrest.
Public Outrage and Call for Justice
This incident has sparked widespread condemnation from individuals and organizations across Ghana. Many have expressed their horror at the abuse of power by a public official and a family member—individuals who should have acted as protectors rather than perpetrators.
The case raises critical concerns about child protection, the misuse of authority, and societal accountability. It underscores the urgent need for robust measures to ensure that children are safeguarded from such abhorrent acts of violence and exploitation.
Ongoing Investigation
The Western Regional Police Command has assured the public that thorough investigations are underway to ensure that justice is served. They have also called on members of the public to assist with information that could lead to the arrest of Isaac Nana Osei or any other individuals involved in this crime.
As this case unfolds, it serves as a grim reminder of the importance of safeguarding vulnerable members of society and holding perpetrators accountable for their actions. The nation watches closely as justice takes its course in this deeply troubling matter.
