In a significant breakthrough, police in the Ashanti South Region have apprehended three individuals in connection with the alleged murder of the Kusasi Chief in Asawase, which occurred in July 2025. The arrests mark a critical step in the ongoing investigation into this tragic incident.
The suspects have been identified as Jamil Usman, also known by his aliases "Babamu" or "Guru," Suleman Yasir Arafat, referred to as "Obasanjo," and Ashiadu Sumbeida, also known as "Eyeshadow." Their apprehension follows an intensive operation aimed at addressing violent crime in the area.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, March 17, at a press briefing in Bekwai, the Ashanti South Regional Police Commander, Joseph Hammond Nyaaba, shared updates on the case. He confirmed that arrangements are being made to transfer the suspects to the Ashanti Regional Police Command for further investigations.
However, one key suspect remains at large. The police have identified him as Illiasu, also known by the nickname "Abodam." Commander Nyaaba appealed to the public for assistance in locating and apprehending Illiasu, urging anyone with information to come forward and support their efforts.
During this operation, law enforcement officers recovered a significant cache of weapons, including two AK-47 assault rifles, one pump-action gun, two pistols, and 44 rounds of .32 ammunition. Commander Nyaaba emphasized that these discoveries highlight the seriousness of the case and the police's commitment to tackling violent crime in the region.
The Regional Commander expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Inspector-General of Police for his unwavering support throughout the operation. He also commended the dedication and professionalism of the officers involved in bringing these suspects into custody. Additionally, he acknowledged and appreciated the vital role played by members of the public who provided critical information leading to these arrests.
This development underscores the importance of community-police collaboration in ensuring public safety and justice. The police remain resolute in their efforts to bring all those responsible for this heinous crime to account.
As investigations continue, authorities encourage anyone with further information about the case or the whereabouts of Illiasu to contact their nearest police station. Together, the community and law enforcement can work toward a safer and more secure Ashanti South Region.
