In a recent development from Tarkwa in Ghana's Western Region, the Circuit Court has remanded two young men into custody for their alleged involvement in a burglary at a local supermarket. The accused, identified as 21-year-old Kingsford Quarshie, alias “Cash Money,” a miner, and 20-year-old Joshua Hammond, alias “Gucci,” a student of Takoradi Technical University, are facing charges of stealing under Section 124(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29). The case is being presided over by Her Honour Bernice Mensimah Ackoh.
The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of March 22, 2026, at approximately 2:22 a.m., at Axe Trading and Service, a supermarket situated in the bustling Market Circle area of Tarkwa. According to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Samuel Ahianor, who presented the case in court, the accused allegedly broke into the shop and stole items including a TM laptop valued at GH¢3,000, cash amounting to GH¢50,000, and a variety of provisions such as rice, milk, sugar, Cerelac, Nido, Milo, and biscuits. The total value of the stolen goods is still being assessed.
The complainant in the case, Evans Antwi, a 33-year-old businessman and resident of Tarkwa, discovered the theft at around 6:30 a.m. on the same day. Upon opening his shop, he noticed that the burglar-proof window had been damaged and the premises ransacked. A closer inspection revealed that numerous items were missing, including the laptop and cash.
CCTV footage from cameras installed within and around the supermarket reportedly captured the accused in action during the break-in. This crucial evidence facilitated police investigations, which led to the recovery of some stolen items. Among the recovered goods were a bag of rice and sachets of Nido and Cerelac found in the room of the second accused, Joshua Hammond.
During police interrogation, both suspects allegedly confessed to committing the crime in their cautioned statements. They also implicated a third individual, identified only as Collins, who is currently on the run. Law enforcement authorities have assured the public that efforts are underway to apprehend this third suspect and recover the remaining stolen items.
The accused have been remanded into custody as investigations continue. They are scheduled to reappear before the court on April 14, 2026. The case has drawn significant public attention due to its implications for security in commercial areas and the involvement of young individuals in criminal activities.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and security measures for businesses. It also underscores the critical role of law enforcement and judicial processes in addressing criminal activities and ensuring justice is served.
Further updates on this case will be provided as investigations progress.
