In a determined effort to combat drug-related activities, the Northern Regional Special Operations Team of the Ghana Police Service, popularly known as "Red Maria," conducted a targeted anti-drug operation in the Tamale Metropolis on Monday, April 20, 2026. The operation, executed with precision and coordination, led to the arrest of seven individuals and the retrieval of 40 wraps of substances suspected to be Indian hemp.

According to a press statement issued by the Public Relations Unit of the Northern Regional Police Command on Tuesday, the operation was part of routine measures aimed at curbing drug peddling and associated criminal behavior in the region. The statement highlighted that intelligence-driven efforts enabled the team to identify hotspots and execute their mission effectively.

Coordinated Swoops at High-Risk Locations

The operation commenced at approximately 8:30 PM and involved a specialized team of 44 personnel. Acting on intelligence reports, the team targeted areas known for drug-related activities, including Zogbeli, Kukuo, and later Savelugu.

At Zogbeli, four suspects were apprehended: Sulemana Sualha, aged 20; Alhassan Ayisha, aged 25; Abdul Fatawu Damba, aged 16; and Mohammed Amin, aged 20. These individuals were arrested on allegations of possession and distribution of narcotic substances.

The team then proceeded to Kukuo, where two additional suspects—identified as Ibrahim Abdulai, aged 20, and Issah Abass, aged 17—were arrested for similar offenses. Following further intelligence gathering, the operation extended to Savelugu. There, Ibrahim Osuman, aged 21, was taken into custody on suspicion of involvement in drug dealing activities. However, a search conducted in his residence did not yield any incriminating substances.

Seizure of Suspected Narcotics

In total, the operation resulted in the retrieval of 40 wraps of substances suspected to be Indian hemp. The seized items are undergoing further examination as investigations continue. The seven suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting authorities with inquiries into their alleged activities.

Commitment to Regional Security

The Northern Regional Police Command reiterated its commitment to ensuring safety and security within the region. By targeting drug-related crimes and dismantling peddling networks, the police aim to reduce criminal activity and promote public safety.

The statement also emphasized that operations such as this are integral to maintaining law and order in communities across Ghana. Citizens are encouraged to collaborate with law enforcement agencies by providing information that can aid in identifying and apprehending individuals involved in illicit activities.

Conclusion

The successful execution of this anti-drug operation underscores the Ghana Police Service's dedication to safeguarding communities and combating crime. As investigations proceed, the public is urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to law enforcement authorities. Together, these efforts contribute to fostering a safer environment for all residents in the Northern Region and beyond.
