A peaceful Easter celebration turned chaotic on Sunday, April 5, when suspected land guards disrupted a convention organized by the Church of Pentecost in Nyanyano, located in the Gomoa East District of Ghana’s Central Region. The event, which was meant to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, was marred by violence and disorder, leaving worshippers traumatized and the community on edge.

The Incident: A Sacred Gathering Interrupted

The convention took place at the forecourt of the community’s palace, a space that was transformed into a sacred venue for the Easter service. According to reports, the Church of Pentecost had extended invitations to two rival chiefs of Gomoa Nyanyano to attend the occasion. However, only one faction honored the invitation, prompting tensions to rise.

During the service, members allegedly aligned with the opposing faction mobilized suspected land guards to storm the venue. The attackers dismantled canopy tents and aggressively ordered worshippers to vacate the premises. What should have been a moment of spiritual reflection and unity quickly devolved into chaos.

Police Intervention and Ongoing Tensions

The Central East Regional Police Command responded swiftly to contain the situation and prevent further escalation. Their timely intervention brought some level of calm to the scene; however, no arrests have been made in connection with this particular disturbance.

In light of the incident, the Gomoa Nyanyano Police Commander has taken precautionary measures by suspending all public activities in the area. This decision aims to mitigate the risk of further clashes amidst an already volatile atmosphere. The leadership of the Church of Pentecost has so far refrained from making any public statements regarding the attack.

Underlying Chieftaincy Dispute Fuels Unrest

The disruption at the Easter convention is believed to be linked to an ongoing chieftaincy dispute in Gomoa Nyanyano. The tensions stem from disagreements following the passing of Nana Wiabo V, a respected traditional leader in the community. The lack of resolution in this matter has created an environment ripe for conflict, with rival factions vying for dominance.

This is not the first time such disputes have led to unrest in Gomoa Nyanyano. In February 2026, a similar incident escalated into violence, resulting in vandalism at the community’s palace. Eighteen suspects were arrested in connection with that event but were later granted bail.

Defiance of Police Orders

In a related development, one individual was arrested on Saturday, April 4, for organizing an Easter float despite explicit police orders prohibiting public activities. This act of defiance further underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement in maintaining order within the community.

A Community in Need of Reconciliation

The events at Gomoa Nyanyano serve as a sobering reminder of how unresolved disputes can spill over into sacred and communal spaces, disrupting not only social harmony but also religious observances. As tensions remain high, it is imperative for community leaders, traditional authorities, and law enforcement to work collaboratively toward resolving the chieftaincy dispute that lies at the heart of these conflicts.

Reconciliation and dialogue are essential to restoring peace in Gomoa Nyanyano. Until then, the suspension of public activities may provide temporary relief, but it is not a sustainable solution for a community that yearns for unity and stability.
