Tragic Attack on Berekum Chelsea Team Bus: Police Launch Manhunt for Armed Suspects

In a deeply troubling incident, six armed men attacked a Berekum Chelsea team bus traveling along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso road on Sunday night, leaving one footballer dead and another passenger robbed of GH¢4,500. The Ashanti Regional Police Command has since launched a manhunt for the perpetrators and assured the public of swift action to bring them to justice.



The Incident


According to a press release issued by the Ashanti Regional Police Command on April 13, 2026, the attack occurred as the bus, a VIP vehicle with registration number AM 9334-20, was transporting approximately 30 football players and officials from Samreboi to Berekum. In an attempt to evade the armed assailants, the bus skidded off the road into a bush. The attackers, three of whom were reportedly wielding pump-action guns, targeted the passengers during this chaotic moment.


Fatality and Robbery


Tragically, Dominic Frimpong, one of the football players onboard, sustained gunshot injuries during the attack. He was rushed to Bibiani Government Hospital but succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment. Another passenger, identified as George Owusu Afriyie, aged 52, was robbed of GH¢4,500.


Police investigators recovered two spent BB cartridges from the scene, which are expected to aid in the ongoing investigation.


 Police Response and Assurances


In response to the attack, the Ashanti Regional Police Command has intensified efforts to apprehend the suspects. Additional personnel and crime scene experts have been deployed to the area as part of the manhunt. In their statement, police officials expressed confidence in their ability to arrest those responsible in the shortest possible time.


"The Regional Police Command has deployed additional personnel and Crime Scene experts to the area and is currently on a manhunt for the suspects. The Police assure the public that the perpetrators will be arrested within the shortest possible time," read the statement signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Godwin Ahianyor, Head of the Public Affairs Unit for the Ashanti Region.


 Call for Public Calm


As investigations continue, the police have urged members of the public to remain calm and maintain trust in law enforcement authorities. "The public is urged to remain calm and continue to have confidence in the Police while investigations continue," the release added.
