In a significant breakthrough for law enforcement, the Tema Police have apprehended a Dutch national alongside two other individuals in connection with a substantial seizure of a white powdered substance, suspected to be cocaine, at the Tema Port enclave. The operation, which was intelligence-driven, highlights the ongoing efforts of the police to curb narcotics trafficking within the region.
The seized substance, concealed within sacks of gari, is estimated to have a street value of approximately US$6.9 million. This discovery underscores the lengths to which traffickers will go to disguise illegal substances and evade detection.
The suspects have been identified as Gilano Horwin, aged 31, John Mensah Sabah, aged 41, and Alhaji Iddris Haruna. Their arrest was part of an operation that intercepted a 40-foot container being loaded with the parcels of the suspected cocaine. The container was mounted on a white DAF truck with the registration number WR 1118-10.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Eric Asamoah Asiedu, the Tema Regional Police Commander, provided details of the operation during a press briefing held on Thursday, August 6, 2026. He explained that the Command received intelligence on August 5, 2026, about suspicious activities involving young men loading parcels of a white substance into a container at a warehouse within the port area.
Upon arrival at the scene, police officers discovered three men overseeing the loading process. A subsequent search of the sacks revealed 866 parcels of the substance suspected to be cocaine. During interrogation, one of the suspects, Gilano Horwin, allegedly confessed that the substance was indeed cocaine and claimed ownership.
The suspects are currently detained to assist with further investigations. Meanwhile, the seized exhibits have been secured and are undergoing forensic examination to ascertain the exact nature of the substance.
DCOP Asamoah Asiedu assured that investigations are ongoing and expressed confidence in uncovering more details about the network behind this illicit operation.
In a related development on the same day, another narcotics operation led to the interception of a taxi by the Prampram District Police. The vehicle was allegedly transporting substances suspected to be Indian hemp. This operation was initiated following intelligence received by the Tsopoli Police at around 5 p.m. on August 5, 2026.
These incidents highlight the persistent challenge of narcotics trafficking in the region and the relentless efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat such illegal activities. The police continue to urge members of the public to provide any information that could assist in their efforts to maintain law and order and ensure community safety.
