We regret to report that four officers of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) have suffered injuries, with two in critical condition, following an unfortunate incident during a fire extinguishing operation at West Legon. The officers were responding to a fire that broke out in a storey building, resulting in damage to offices on the first floor.
According to Assistant Divisional Officer Alex King Nartey from the Public Relations Department of the GNFS, the fire was initially responded to by the team at Legon. However, due to the intensity of the blaze, additional support was requested from Abelempke and Madina. Tragically, while battling the fire, a structural beam collapsed on the firefighters, causing injuries to four of them. Two officers are currently in critical condition and are receiving medical attention.
It is important to note that the fire, which occurred at West Legon, was classified as a commercial fire. Our thoughts are with the injured officers and their families during this difficult time.
The safety and well-being of our firefighters are of utmost importance, and this incident serves as a reminder of the risks they undertake in the line of duty. We extend our gratitude to all firefighters for their bravery and commitment to protecting lives and property.
We urge the public to exercise caution and adhere to fire safety measures to prevent such incidents in the future. The GNFS remains dedicated to ensuring the safety of all citizens and will continue to work tirelessly to prevent and respond to fire emergencies.
