We are deeply concerned by the recent armed robbery attack on a mining site in Akyem Akokoaso, within the Ofoase Ayirebi constituency of the Eastern Region, which resulted in the shooting of at least five Chinese nationals. This brazen act has left three individuals in critical condition, and our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this difficult time.

The targeted robbery took place at the office of Jia Xin Industrial mining company, known for its underground mining activities within old shafts in the area. Reports indicate that a group of approximately 15 armed robbers seized the opportunity during a social gathering at night, making off with cash amounting to Ghc10,000 and two gold bars. The severity of the attack is further underscored by the fact that one victim sustained a gunshot injury in a sensitive area.

The assailants displayed a calculated and organized approach by disabling the CCTV cameras, confiscating their decoders to avoid detection. This level of premeditation is deeply troubling and underscores the audacity of the perpetrators.

The victims are currently hospitalized and receiving treatment, and we fervently hope for their swift and full recovery.

It is important to note that there have been longstanding tensions between the mining company and the local community. Accusations of illegal mining practices have been levied against Jia Xin Industrial, particularly regarding their lack of proper licensing for extensive underground mining activities, which have reportedly caused damage to the area. The company inherited its prospecting license in 2018, following approval by then-Minister John Peter Amewu. However, recent confrontations between the company and local youth have escalated, leading to arrests for illegal mining activities on the company’s concession.

This incident is not an isolated one, as the mining company has reportedly suffered multiple robbery attacks in recent times. The safety and security of all individuals, regardless of nationality, must be paramount, and it is imperative that measures are taken to address the underlying issues and prevent further acts of violence.

We call for a thorough investigation into this appalling attack and urge all relevant authorities to work towards ensuring the safety of all individuals in the region. Our hope is for swift justice to be served and for steps to be taken to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
