We are deeply saddened to report on a disturbing incident that has recently taken place in Assin Aniakagya, located in the Assin North district of the Central region. The decomposing body of a 23-year-old man, Kofi Adams, who was buried just 3 days ago, has been exhumed under troubling circumstances.

According to reports, the body is currently being dried in the sun, following its exhumation. Kofi Adams met his untimely death after allegedly drowning in an abandoned galamsey pit in the area. The family of the deceased and the community elders conducted a burial according to Muslim customs before informing the police about the tragic event.

Subsequently, the police allegedly ordered for the exhumation of the body to facilitate a postmortem examination in order to ascertain the cause of death. It has been indicated that further investigations into the cause of Kofi Adams’s death need to be carried out before his remains can be laid to rest.

However, it is concerning to note that without an official exhumation order and environmental health directives, members of the community took it upon themselves to exhume the body and send it to the mortuary. Regrettably, the mortuary staff rejected the body due to its advanced state of decomposition. As a result, the body was returned to the community and left in the sun to dry, despite the potential health implications associated with such actions.

The situation worsened when the smell emanating from the decomposing remains became unbearable for the community. Consequently, they decided to return the body to the cemetery, placing it in the grave without covering it.

In the midst of these distressing events, the family of the deceased has been pleading with the police to allow for the burial of Kofi Adams, in order to address the issues surrounding his untimely demise.

This distressing sequence of events calls for urgent attention and investigation to ensure that proper procedures are followed, and respect is accorded to the deceased and his family during this difficult time. We hope that swift and appropriate action will be taken to address this deeply unfortunate situation.
