We are deeply saddened to report the unfortunate incident that occurred in the Nkumkrom community of the Nsawam Adoagyiri Municipality on Friday, February 2, 2024. Unidentified individuals vandalized and stole copper windings from a 200kVA transformer owned by the Electricity Company of Ghana Ltd (ECG), resulting in the transformer being pushed down from its pole mount. As a consequence, the entire community was left without power.

The cost of the 200kVA transformer has been estimated at Gh¢ 80,000.00 by ECG. This act of vandalism has not only caused significant financial loss but has also disrupted the lives of the residents who rely on the power supply for their daily activities.

Emmanuel Ankrah, the Acting General Manager of the Accra West Region, has expressed his dismay over the incident. He has urged communities to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activities around ECG installations. Ankrah emphasized the importance of protecting electrical equipment that serves the community, highlighting the collective responsibility to prevent such acts of vandalism.

In response to this incident, ECG has reported the matter to the police, and investigations are currently underway. It is crucial for the perpetrators of this crime to be held accountable for their actions and for measures to be put in place to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.

Acts of vandalism not only result in financial losses for companies like ECG but also have a direct impact on the communities they serve. It is essential for community members to work together with utility companies to safeguard critical infrastructure and prevent disruptions to essential services.

We urge anyone with information about this incident to come forward and assist the authorities in their investigations. Together, we can ensure that such acts of vandalism are not tolerated and that our communities remain safe and functional.
