We recently received disturbing news of a robbery incident involving a professor from the University of Ghana, who was conducting research with students in the community of Dixcove, located in the Ahanta West Municipality of the Western Region. The incident, which occurred on Valentine’s Day, resulted in not only the loss of personal belongings but also in serious injuries sustained by two police officers who attempted to apprehend the suspects.

According to Joana Koomson, the Assembly member of Upper Dixcove, the professor and his students were attacked by armed robbers while they were outside, enjoying the evening. The perpetrators gained access to the professor’s room, where they stole valuable items including a laptop, phones, and cash. Additionally, they caused destruction to other property before fleeing the scene.

The prompt response from the local police led to the arrest of two suspects from Lower Dixcove, with the recovery of the stolen laptop. However, it is concerning to note that a shortage of premix has led to unemployment in the community, potentially contributing to a rise in criminal activities. The resulting impact on the community's young men, who may turn to substance abuse and criminal behavior, is a cause for further concern.

This unfortunate incident is not an isolated case, as it follows a similar robbery targeting a medical doctor at the Dixcove government hospital last year. The traditional authorities at Upper Dixcove have expressed their disappointment at the increasing rate of such criminal activities and have called upon the police to take swift action to ensure the safety of residents and visitors alike.

Of particular concern is the potential impact on tourism in the area, given that Dixcove is home to Fort Metal Cross, a historical site that draws numerous tourists on a daily basis. The authorities have warned that continued insecurity could deter visitors and have far-reaching implications for the local economy.

It is imperative that both local and regional authorities work together to address the root causes of these criminal activities and to enhance security measures in Dixcove. The safety and well-being of residents, researchers, and tourists must be prioritized to prevent such incidents from recurring.
