We have recently witnessed a case where two individuals, Desmond Ampong, 23, and Evans Sarpong, 24, both unemployed, attempted to escape from police custody after being arrested for theft. The Tatkwa circuit court has sentenced them to four years in jail for their actions.

The two suspects pleaded guilty to the charges of attempting to elude justice and conspiring to commit a crime. While in police custody at Bawdie in the Western Region, they allegedly devised a plan to escape by creating a hole in the cell wall.

According to Chief Inspector Juliana Essel-Dadzie, who presented the case to the court presided over by Hathia Ama Manu, the complainants were Bawdie police officers. The first suspect, Ampong, was apprehended for stealing a motorbike at Fahia Korbor near Obuasi on October 23, 2023, while Sarpong was arrested at Bawdie for stealing a goat.

The prosecutor stated that on October 25, 2023, at about 2pm, the station officer heard an unusual noise coming from the cells. Upon investigation, it was discovered that Sarpong was attempting to create a hole in the cell wall using a chisel while Ampong stood guard at the entrance.

Both suspects were arrested and interrogated, during which they admitted to the offences in their caution statements.

It is evident that their actions were premeditated and aimed at avoiding justice. The court's decision to sentence them to four years in jail serves as a reminder of the consequences of attempting to evade the law. Such behavior undermines the justice system and cannot be tolerated in any society.

This case highlights the importance of upholding the rule of law and the role of law enforcement in maintaining order and ensuring that those who break the law are held accountable for their actions. It also serves as a warning to others who may contemplate similar actions in the future.

The sentencing of Ampong and Sarpong should serve as a deterrent to potential offenders and reinforce the message that attempting to escape justice will result in serious consequences. It is crucial for individuals to understand that there are legal and ethical ways to address grievances or disputes, and resorting to criminal activities will only lead to severe repercussions.

As members of society, we must all uphold the principles of justice and respect the rule of law. It is through collective adherence to these principles that we can ensure a safe and orderly community for everyone.
