In light of the upcoming Easter and Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations, the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has issued a warning to the public regarding the heightened risk of online scams during festive seasons.

According to the CSA, there have been 194 reported cases of online fraud resulting in a total loss of approximately GH¢ 2,404,161 between January and March of this year. These scams, which include online shopping and phishing schemes, have targeted individuals taking part in increased commercial activity associated with festive periods.

As a result, the CSA is urging the public to exercise caution and due diligence when engaging in online activities, particularly during the upcoming Easter and Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations. The Authority has emphasized the importance of being vigilant and wary of "too good to be true" deals that may surface during this time.

To mitigate the risk of falling victim to online scams, the CSA has provided the following recommendations:

1. Utilize reputable online marketplaces or retailers when making purchases or gifts.

2. Verify the contact details of online shops through official websites or reliable sources.

3. Insist on payment only after delivery and inspection of goods.

4. Ensure that mobile money payments are made to wallets in the name of the online shop being dealt with.

5. Refrain from sharing personal information such as Ghana card numbers, credit card details, or bank account information with anyone.

It is crucial for individuals to remain vigilant and exercise caution when engaging in online transactions, especially during festive seasons when the risk of falling victim to scams is heightened. By following these guidelines and remaining informed about potential risks, individuals can better protect themselves from falling prey to malicious actors seeking to exploit the increased commercial activity associated with festive periods.

The CSA's alert serves as a timely reminder for individuals to prioritize their online security and take proactive measures to safeguard themselves against potential online threats. By staying informed and exercising caution, individuals can minimize the risk of falling victim to online scams and ensure a safe and secure online experience during the upcoming festive celebrations.
