In a recent ruling by the High Court in Accra, Ebenezer Kwayisi, a mason apprentice, has been sentenced to 30 years in jail for his involvement in the abetment of the murder of Professor Emmanuel Yaw Benneh, a law lecturer at the University of Ghana. Kwayisi, also known as Junior, entered into a Plea Bargaining agreement with the State, resulting in a lesser punishment in exchange for his guilty plea.

The 25-year-old apprentice was initially charged with abetment of crime to wit murder following the death of the prime suspect, James Nana Womba, who was the house boy of the late Prof. Benneh. However, Kwayisi's plea agreement led to his conviction and sentencing to 30 years of hard labor.

It is worth noting that the original charge of abetment carries a life sentence if proven. Kwayisi's decision to enter into the Plea Bargaining agreement with the State resulted in a reduced jail term.

The tragic incident took place in 2020 when Professor Benneh was murdered at his residence in Agyriganor. The Police initially held two suspects, including Kwayisi, for their alleged involvement in the crime.

According to reports, Womba's accomplice, Ebenezer Kwayisi, was a mason apprentice residing at Kasoa. The prosecution revealed that the deceased was found dead with multiple marks of assault on his body and evidence of strangulation and suspected homicide.

The court heard that Womba had initially recruited a gang to execute the plan to murder the victim but later had a change of heart and sought Kwayisi's assistance to carry out the heinous act. This led to the tragic events that resulted in the death of Professor Benneh.

The sentencing of Ebenezer Kwayisi serves as a sobering reminder of the consequences of involvement in criminal activities. It also highlights the importance of upholding the rule of law and seeking justice for victims of heinous crimes.

As the legal proceedings come to a close, it is hoped that the verdict brings some measure of closure to the family and loved ones of the late Professor Emmanuel Yaw Benneh. The case underscores the significance of thorough investigations and adherence to due process in ensuring that perpetrators of such acts are held accountable for their actions.

The sentencing of Ebenezer Kwayisi stands as a testament to the commitment of the judicial system in upholding justice and serving as a deterrent to individuals who may contemplate engaging in criminal activities.
