We are deeply saddened to report on a tragic incident that occurred on Tuesday night, resulting in the loss of a University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) student. The armed robbery attack on a group of students from the School of Energy, who were returning from an excursion to the Bui Power Generating Station, led to the untimely death of Abdul Aziz Issah, a level 400 student.
We have received information that at least one suspect has been arrested in connection with this heinous crime. According to a source at the Odomase Police Station, the suspect is currently in custody as the authorities continue their investigations into this distressing event.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Abdul Aziz Issah during this difficult time. The deceased's body has been deposited at a mortuary in Sunyani, while the injured students are receiving medical treatment at the Sunyani Teaching Hospital.
Reports indicate that the robbery took place on the Badu-Odomase stretch, where the perpetrators targeted not only the students but also local communities and motor riders. The robbers reportedly fled the scene before the arrival of law enforcement, leaving behind a trail of stolen money, mobile phones, and other valuables.
Mr. Attah Kwasi Dognekoh, the Assemblyman of the Abronye Electoral Area, Sunyani West Municipality, promptly alerted the Odomase police upon receiving a distress call about the robbery. He recounted that the robbers had unleashed gunfire and carried out attacks in several nearby communities, further victimizing residents and motorbike riders.
At this time, we understand that the police have engaged with the university authorities as part of their ongoing efforts to address this unfortunate incident.
We urge anyone with relevant information to come forward and assist the authorities in their pursuit of justice. The safety and well-being of our communities, especially our students, are of paramount importance, and we must work together to ensure that such acts of violence are met with swift and decisive action.
As more details emerge from the investigation, we remain committed to providing support to all those affected by this tragedy. Our hearts go out to the UENR community as we mourn the loss of one of our own.
