In recent news, an intriguing case involving two Prison Officers has caught the attention of the public. The Accra Circuit Court has adjourned the case to May 3, concerning the alleged assistance provided by the officers to a Chinese convicted prisoner, Wang Xiao, in his escape from Nsawam Medium Security Prisons.
The accused officers, Joseph Oteng and Sergeant Isaac Boateng Bonsu, have firmly denied the charges of conspiracy and aiding escape. The court, presided over by Mrs. Afia Owusuaa Appiah, has decided to adjourn the matter to allow the prosecution to file their disclosures. Currently, the correctional officers are each on GHC 100,000 bail.
According to the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Wisdom Alorwu, the complainant was the third in Command at the Nsawam Medium Security Prisons, and the accused were serving under his supervision. The court heard that on February 7, 2024, the two officers were detailed to escort Xiao to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for treatment. However, it is alleged that they instead accompanied Xiao to Oceans Hotel at Korle Gonno to meet his wife in exchange for a reward.
The prosecution further stated that the accused removed the convict’s handcuffs and took him to the hotel reception. Subsequently, Xiao and his alleged wife reportedly fled from the hotel room through the balcony, while the accused were relaxing in the reception area after receiving meals from the convict’s wife.
Following these events, the accused officers allegedly proceeded to hide the handcuffs at Tema Station Hockey Pitch and then reported to their superiors at Nsawam that the convict had unexpectedly escaped during an encounter with an unregistered taxi.
Subsequent investigations led to the discovery of CCTV footage at the hotel, which revealed the sequence of events leading to Xiao's escape. It was only after being alerted by hotel staff that the accused realized the convict had fled.
This case has certainly raised eyebrows and sparked public interest. The unfolding details provide a glimpse into a complex and intriguing situation. As the legal proceedings continue, it remains to be seen how this case will unfold. Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops.
