In a recent ruling by the Accra Circuit Court Six, a 27-year-old housekeeper, Elijah Nagbo, has been sentenced to ten years in jail with hard labour for his involvement in an attempted robbery of his employer's vehicles.
Nagbo, who pleaded guilty with an explanation to prepare for robbery, was convicted and sentenced accordingly. His alleged accomplice, Joel, is currently on the run, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Emmanuel Nyamekye.
The case revolved around the complainant, Mr. Awuah Amponsah, a building contractor and resident of Tantra Hill. Nagbo, who lived with the complainant and his family as a housekeeper, was implicated in a plot to steal the complainant's Honda CR-V, Toyota Corolla, and KIA Cerato vehicles with registration numbers GW 4895-18, GR 8713-23, and GN 9609-13, and sell them in Tema.
Following a phone call to the complainant from an unknown individual alleging Nagbo's conspiracy to rob him, the matter was reported to the police, leading to Nagbo's arrest for investigation. During questioning, Nagbo admitted to the crime and implicated Joel as an accomplice.
Further investigation revealed that Nagbo had been in cahoots with Joel, a former acquaintance from Jasikan in the Oti Region who had since relocated to Ashaiman. The duo had devised a plan to steal the vehicles, with Nagbo even facilitating the process by inviting Joel to the residence to photograph the vehicles and forward the images to a prospective buyer in Tema.
Additionally, it was uncovered that the plan involved kidnapping the complainant and his wife, both of whom were described as frail and elderly, and holding them captive in their room. Nagbo was also found to have knowledge of the whereabouts of the keys to the targeted vehicles.
The sentencing of Nagbo serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of criminal activities such as attempted robbery. The court's decision reflects a commitment to upholding the law and ensuring justice for victims of such crimes.
It is imperative for individuals and employers to exercise caution and vigilance in their interactions and engagements with domestic staff or any individuals with access to their personal property. This case underscores the importance of thorough background checks and ongoing monitoring of individuals entrusted with responsibilities within private residences or businesses.
As the legal proceedings continue and efforts are made to apprehend Joel, it is essential for the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement authorities in addressing such criminal activities. The swift action taken by the police in this case is commendable and underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in maintaining law and order within our communities.
