We are deeply saddened to report the devastating fire that occurred at the 31st Young Women Christian Association (YWCA) Palm Oil Factory in Akyem New Tafo, Eastern Region. The fire, which broke out around 11:45 pm on April 3rd, has resulted in significant damage to the factory and its assets.
The Bunso fire station of the Ghana National Fire Service has initiated investigations into the cause of the fire. At this time, the exact cause is not known and we are working diligently to uncover the source of this tragic event.
The firefighting efforts were met with challenges due to the combustive nature of the items in the factory, resulting in more than 5 hours to bring the fire under control. Regrettably, despite the efforts of the fire fighters, the inferno led to the destruction of over 2,516 gallons of palm oil, valued at approximately 1.2 million Ghana Cedis, as well as other extraction equipment. This has caused a significant loss for the more than eighty female workers who have invested their time and resources into the factory.
We understand the impact that this incident has had on the local community and the individuals involved. Our thoughts are with the affected workers and their families during this difficult time.
As we await the findings of the investigations, we remain committed to supporting the YWCA Palm Oil Factory and its employees in any way we can. We will provide updates on the situation as more information becomes available.
We extend our gratitude to the fire fighters and emergency responders for their tireless efforts in addressing the fire. We also appreciate the ongoing support from the community during this challenging period.
We are hopeful that with collective efforts, the YWCA Palm Oil Factory will be able to recover from this setback and continue its important work in the region.
