The Krofrom market, a multi-million dollar commercial edifice in one of the prominent suburbs of Kumasi, has unfortunately become a haven for rodents and criminals. What was once envisioned as a bustling hub for business activities has now deteriorated into a shadow of its former potential.

Initiated in 2007 by former President Kuffuor, the market project was intended to be completed within six months. However, due to a lack of funds, it was abandoned in 2008. The market was designed to accommodate over 500 stores and shelves, with the aim of enhancing business activities in the metropolis.

The completion of the Krofrom Market Project was anticipated to alleviate congestion in the central business district, particularly as other redevelopment projects in the area were underway. Unfortunately, this vision has not materialized, and the market continues to decay. The presence of hawkers and traders on the streets further exacerbates congestion in the central business districts of Kumasi.

Numerous appeals and agitations for the completion of the abandoned market have gone unanswered. The current state of the market is not only an eyesore but also poses a danger to residents and individuals conducting business in the vicinity.

Local traders and residents have expressed their frustration over the prolonged period of abandonment, which has had a detrimental impact on commercial activities in the area. The deteriorating state of the market has also attracted criminal elements, making it unsafe for both residents and passersby.

Madam Charity Ayamba, who operates a Kente weaving business in the vicinity, voiced her concerns about the continued neglect of the project by the government. Mr. Kofi Douglas, a resident, highlighted the security risks posed by the presence of criminals who have taken over the abandoned market.

The situation has prompted local authorities to take action, with Mr. Isaac Owusu, the assemblyman for the Krofrom electoral area, implementing measures such as erecting street lights to deter criminal activities.

It is evident that urgent attention from the government is required to address the deteriorating state of the Krofrom market. The completion of this project is not only crucial for economic activities in the area but also for ensuring the safety and well-being of the community.

As efforts continue to address this pressing issue, it is essential for all stakeholders to work together towards revitalizing the market and restoring it to its intended purpose as a vibrant center for commerce in Kumasi.
