In a recent development, the case of the Police Constable accused of shooting a driver to death over transport fare at Kuntunse Satellite, near Amasaman has been adjourned to September 24.
General Constable Smith Gyekyi is facing charges of murder in relation to the unfortunate death of one Stanley Ahadzi.
During the court proceedings at an Adabraka District Court, Prosecution led by Chief Inspector Apewah Achana informed the Court that investigations were still ongoing and requested for additional time. It was stated that the completion of investigations and the subsequent submission of the docket to the office of the Attorney General were pending.
Despite being legally represented by his Counsel, Mr John Agbotey, in court, the plea of twenty-five-year-old Constable Gyekyi has been reserved by the Court.
The presiding Judge, Ms Ama Adomako Kwakye, appealed to the family members of the deceased to exercise restraint as they pursue justice for their relative. She emphasized the need for the Police to conclude their investigations and forward the docket to the Attorney General for advice and a Bill of Indictment. The Judge further explained that once the Bill of Indictment had been prepared, committal proceedings would be conducted. She urged the family to refrain from spreading misinformation and to diligently follow up on the matter.
The facts presented in court revealed that on Sunday, August 18, 2024, at approximately 0400 hours, a report was received by the Police control room indicating that a male adult had been shot at the frontage of Koans Estate in Satellite Kuntunse, near Amasaman. Upon arrival at the scene, it was discovered that Stanley Ahadzi, aged 25, was found deceased with a gunshot wound to his head.
It was disclosed that Gyekyi, who was using his private car for commercial purposes, had picked up a passenger named Esther Owusua and while en route, a dispute arose between Owusua and Ahadzi regarding the fare charged. This altercation led to Gyekyi firing a warning shot and subsequently shooting Ahadzi.
Following the incident, Gyekyi voluntarily reported himself to the Amasaman Divisional Police and was subsequently detained. It was also noted that Gyekyi admitted to the offense during the course of the investigations.
As this case unfolds, it is imperative for all parties involved to allow due process to take its course. The pursuit of justice must be conducted within the confines of the law, and it is essential for accurate information to be disseminated. Our thoughts remain with the family and loved ones of Stanley Ahadzi during this difficult time.
The adjournment of the case to September 24 signifies a critical juncture in this legal process, and we will continue to monitor its developments.
