The Ghana Police Service has intensified its efforts to address security concerns in specific areas of the country, following reports of robbery attacks and a fatal shooting incident. These developments were highlighted by DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), during a joint press conference with the Cyber Security Authority in Accra on Monday, August 4.
Increased Police Visibility in Greater Accra Region
In response to reports of robbery attacks, particularly at the Awudome Cemetery area and along the Achimota-GIMPA road, DCOP Donkor announced that the Greater Accra Regional Police Command has been directed to enhance its visibility in these locations. These measures aim to deter criminal activities and ensure public safety.
“The Awudome cemetery issue, I know, went viral; a lot of people were circulating it. So what we did was we directed the regional command to focus on that area in terms of their visibility,” she stated. “Not just Awudome because we definitely have other areas of concern—people mention the GIMPA stretch as another area—so we have directed that they should step up the visibility effort, so I believe we should be hearing positive stories.”
DCOP Donkor further emphasized the importance of public cooperation in combating crime, urging individuals to report robbery incidents or any suspicious activities to the police. She assured the public that various police units and Public Affairs offices are readily available to receive complaints and provide assistance.
Investigation into Fatal Shooting Incident at Asawase
In addition to addressing robbery concerns, DCOP Donkor provided updates on the investigation into a fatal shooting incident that occurred on the evening of Monday, July 22, 2025, at Asawase F-Line, a suburb in the Ashanti Region. The tragic event involved a middle-aged man who was fatally shot by two unidentified assailants riding motorbikes. The suspects reportedly approached the victim at close range, opened fire, and fled the scene.
The victim was initially rushed to the Manhyia District Hospital and later referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His body has since been deposited at the Ebenezer Mortuary in Tafo for autopsy.
The Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe; Regional Crime Officer ACP Ebenezer Boyor; and a team of officers visited the crime scene as part of their investigation. During their inspection, two empty shells suspected to be from an AK-47 assault rifle were recovered and documented.
DCOP Donkor assured the public that the investigation remains active and that updates will be provided once it is concluded. She called on anyone with relevant information about the incident to contact the nearest police station or use the emergency lines: 191, 18555, and 112.
Public Cooperation: A Vital Component of Crime Prevention
The Ghana Police Service reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order across the country and urged citizens to collaborate by reporting crimes or suspicious activities. The role of public cooperation cannot be overstated in ensuring swift police action and effective crime prevention.
As these efforts unfold, the Ghana Police Service seeks to reassure citizens of its dedication to safeguarding their safety and security. The initiatives undertaken in response to robbery concerns and ongoing investigations into violent crimes demonstrate the agency’s resolve to address pressing issues and uphold public trust.
Stay tuned for further updates on these developments as the Ghana Police Service continues its work to combat crime and protect communities across the nation.
