In a resolute effort to combat illegal mining activities in Ghana, the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has achieved another significant milestone. Between August 5 and August 7, 2025, a targeted operation in the Wassa Akropong area of the Western Region led to the arrest of nine Chinese nationals actively engaged in illegal mining, commonly referred to as "galamsey."
The operation, conducted with precision and intelligence-led strategies, resulted in the apprehension of seven males and two females. NAIMOS also seized four excavators during the raid, which are now securely in police custody. In addition, various equipment and tools used in the illegal mining activities were destroyed on-site to prevent their reuse.
Following their arrest, the suspects were transferred to the NAIMOS headquarters, where they were handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for further investigations. This collaboration aims to ensure a thorough probe into the activities of the individuals and facilitate appropriate legal action.
NAIMOS: A Pillar in the Fight Against Galamsey
Since its establishment in March 2025, NAIMOS has emerged as the sole coordinating authority for all anti-illegal mining efforts in Ghana. Under the leadership of its Director of Operations, the Secretariat has been conducting targeted raids designed to dismantle illegal mining operations and restore environmental integrity.
This recent operation in Wassa Akropong adds to a growing list of successful interventions by NAIMOS. The Secretariat has consistently prioritized intelligence-driven strategies to identify hotspots for illegal mining and deploy resources effectively. These efforts reflect the government’s unwavering commitment to curbing galamsey, which has long been a menace to Ghana’s natural resources and ecosystems.
Restoring Ghana’s Environment: A Mission of National Importance
Illegal mining has caused widespread destruction across Ghana, polluting water bodies, degrading fertile lands, and undermining sustainable development. NAIMOS has pledged to intensify its operations in key areas such as Amenfi and Wassa, where illegal mining activities have been particularly rampant. By reclaiming devastated lands and restoring polluted water bodies, the Secretariat aims to reverse the environmental damage caused by galamsey.
The recent arrests and equipment seizures serve as a stark reminder of the consequences awaiting those who engage in illegal mining activities. NAIMOS has reiterated its commitment to enforcing the law and safeguarding Ghana’s natural heritage for future generations.
Looking Ahead
As NAIMOS continues its operations, public support and cooperation remain vital. The Secretariat calls on communities, local authorities, and stakeholders to join hands in the fight against illegal mining. Together, Ghana can achieve a sustainable balance between resource extraction and environmental preservation.
The arrests in Wassa Akropong mark yet another step forward in this national mission. With NAIMOS leading the charge, there is renewed hope for a future free from the destructive grip of galamsey.
