In a recent development, four individuals arrested in connection with disturbances at the Osei Tutu Senior High School in Akropong, located within the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality, have been granted bail by the Abuakwa Circuit Court. The suspects, who were charged with conspiracy to commit crime and riot, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The court, presided over by Mr. Jephthah Appau, granted each of the accused a bail amount of GHS 15,000.00 with one surety, summing up to a total bail of GHS 60,000.00 for all four individuals. They are expected to reappear before the court on October 17, 2023, for further proceedings.
The accused are identified as Samuel Aloo, a 21-year-old mechanic; Abukari Sadik, a 24-year-old butcher; Andrews Boateng, a 27-year-old dealer in second-hand goods; and Emmanuel Gariba, a 20-year-old tricycle rider. All four individuals are residents of Atwima-Manhyia and Esaase.
Background of the Incident
Police Detective Inspector Alexander Agbekpornu, prosecuting the case, provided details surrounding the incident. According to his account, tensions began approximately a week prior to the disturbance when a clash occurred between the youth of Esaase and students of Osei Tutu Senior High School. The altercation reportedly stemmed from allegations of mobile phone theft, which escalated into threats of violence and disrupted the peace in the local community.
On August 27, 2023, at approximately 7:00 PM, the situation intensified as a group of Esaase youth, including the suspects, allegedly organized themselves and attempted to enter the school premises with intentions to burn down a hostel. In response to the threat, students of the school erected a roadblock on the Akropong-Esaase road in front of the school’s main gate and threw stones at the intruders to prevent them from entering.
The police, acting on information about the brewing unrest, swiftly intervened at the scene. While many of the youth managed to flee upon the arrival of law enforcement officers, four individuals were apprehended. Following further investigations into their involvement in the incident, they were formally charged and brought before the court.
Legal Proceedings and Next Steps
The granting of bail marks the initial phase of legal proceedings for the suspects. As they await their next court appearance on October 17, authorities continue to investigate the broader circumstances surrounding the clash. The prosecution has emphasized its commitment to ensuring justice is served while maintaining peace and security in the affected areas.
This incident highlights ongoing challenges related to community relations and youth conduct in educational settings. Stakeholders are encouraged to work collaboratively to address underlying issues and foster harmony between local communities and schools.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of resolving disputes through lawful and non-violent means while upholding public safety and order. Further updates on this matter will be provided as developments unfold in court.
