In a significant development, an officer of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has been apprehended in connection with the alleged transportation of 2,600 rounds of AK-47 live ammunition, which were intercepted in the Ashanti Region. The incident has raised concerns about security breaches and the involvement of law enforcement personnel in unlawful activities.

The suspect, identified as Assistant Immigration Control Officer I (AICO I) Ahmed Abdul Samad, was handed over to the Police following a formal request by the Upper East Regional Police Commander, DCOP/Mr. John Dzineku Ferguson. The officer is currently assisting authorities in ongoing investigations.

According to police sources, AICO I Abdul Samad was escorted on January 2, 2026, at approximately 12:20 PM by the Regional Provost of the Bolgatanga Regional Immigration Office, DSI Mr. Awaitey Clement Adantey, and his team. He was subsequently handed over to law enforcement officials to aid in uncovering the circumstances surrounding the illicit transportation of ammunition.

The suspect, a Mamprusi native from Nalerigu, was stationed at the Paga Sector Command at the time of his arrest. Preliminary investigations suggest that he played a central role in the transportation of the intercepted AK-47 ammunition. Authorities are working to determine the full extent of his involvement and whether other individuals may have been complicit in the operation.

During an interrogation, AICO I Abdul Samad provided details about his recent activities. He revealed that he previously served as a dispatch rider at the Tema Regional Immigration Headquarters before being transferred to the Paga Sector Command in June 2025. He explained that upon his transfer, he left behind several personal items, including a body armor plate and a pair of old black long boots.

The suspect claimed that on December 26, 2025, he contacted another immigration officer, identified only as Isaac, who is stationed at the Immigration Headquarters in Accra. He reportedly asked Isaac to send these personal items to him. The package allegedly included a body armor plate, black boots, a ballistic helmet, an electric diffuser, and a disco bulb.

According to Abdul Samad, arrangements were made for the parcel to be sent via an OA Bus with registration number GT 5771-18, which was driven by an individual identified as Charles Brown. The package was intended to be received by a man named Siso in Walewale on December 27, 2025. However, Siso was subsequently arrested by the Police.

Law enforcement authorities have confirmed that Abdul Samad is currently in custody and assisting with investigations. They are working diligently to uncover the full details of the case and ascertain whether additional individuals were involved in the transportation of the ammunition.

This incident underscores the critical need for vigilance within law enforcement agencies and highlights the importance of stringent measures to prevent such breaches. The Ghana Immigration Service and Police are committed to ensuring accountability and upholding national security.

Investigations into this matter remain ongoing, and further updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
