In a decisive action to uphold law and order, the Accra Regional Police Command has apprehended a 53-year-old man, Seth Welbeck, on charges of threat of death and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. The arrest took place on Tuesday, February 3, following an alarming incident that unfolded during court proceedings.

According to a statement issued by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, the suspect was initially summoned to appear before the Accra Circuit Court in connection with a forgery case. After the court proceedings, while being escorted to the court cells, Mr. Welbeck requested permission from the investigator to secure his vehicle. It was during this process that he retrieved a loaded Smith & Wesson SD9 VE pistol containing nine rounds of 9mm ammunition from his vehicle and pointed it at the investigator, issuing threats.

The situation was swiftly brought under control thanks to the intervention of court officials and witnesses present at the scene. The investigator, with their assistance, successfully disarmed the suspect, averting potentially dire consequences.

Currently, Mr. Welbeck remains in police custody as investigations continue. Authorities have assured the public that he will be arraigned to face justice for his actions.

The Accra Regional Police Command has taken this opportunity to issue a stern warning to the public against acts of violence, threats, and the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. Such actions, they emphasized, pose significant risks to public safety and property. The Command further urged individuals to adhere strictly to lawful court processes and police procedures at all times.

In their statement, the Police Command reiterated their commitment to maintaining law and order, stating: “Any attempt to obstruct justice, intimidate public officers or resort to violence will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law.”

This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of respecting legal processes and the serious consequences that follow any attempt to undermine justice or endanger public safety. The Accra Regional Police Command continues to work diligently to ensure the safety and security of all citizens in the region.
