In a commendable display of vigilance and professionalism, a police bodyguard stationed at the residence of a Court of Appeal judge in Kumasi successfully thwarted a robbery attempt on the night of March 3, 2023. The Ghana Police Service has confirmed the incident in an official press release issued on March 4, detailing the events that unfolded.
The Incident
According to the police report, the attempted robbery occurred at approximately 11:30 p.m. when two individuals, later identified as Patrick Alor, 23, and Akwasi Gyamfi, 21, allegedly scaled the fence wall of the judge’s residence. The suspects were reportedly armed with cutlasses and a pair of scissors, which they intended to use in their criminal activities.
Upon entering the compound, the suspects attempted to forcibly gain access to the judge's private vehicle. However, their actions did not go unnoticed by the police bodyguard assigned to the premises.
Confrontation and Resistance
Preliminary investigations reveal that the officer on duty detected the suspects’ movements and promptly confronted them. In an apparent effort to evade arrest, the suspects resisted and allegedly attempted to disarm the officer. This led to a tense confrontation.
Officer Acts in Self-Defence
In response to the suspects’ resistance and in adherence to operational protocols, the officer discharged his firearm in self-defence. The gunshots resulted in injuries to both suspects, who sustained wounds to their left and right legs. The injured men were subdued and taken into custody by the officer.
Medical Attention for Suspects
Following their arrest, the suspects were immediately transported to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi for medical treatment. They are currently receiving care under police guard as investigations into the attempted robbery continue.
