In a dramatic turn of events, a suspected armed robber has died while allegedly attempting to escape police custody in the Savannah Region of Ghana. The deceased, identified as 30-year-old Mumin Kresi, succumbed to injuries sustained after reportedly jumping from the rear of a moving police vehicle. The incident occurred in the early hours of March 24, 2026, as law enforcement officers were transporting him to his residence to retrieve evidence linked to a robbery investigation.

Arrest and Initial Investigation

Kresi was apprehended on the evening of March 23, 2026, in Daboya during an intelligence-led operation. Police reports indicate that he was lured from his hideout and taken into custody. Following his arrest, Kresi reportedly admitted to his involvement in a robbery and provided critical information about the crime. During interrogation, he disclosed that one of the pistols used in the robbery was hidden at his residence in Yerezori. Additionally, he alleged that a second weapon, along with stolen money and mobile phones, was in the possession of an accomplice identified only as "Berra."

The Escape Attempt and Tragic Outcome

According to the police situational report, officers were escorting Kresi to his residence at approximately 3:40 a.m. on March 24 to recover the hidden weapon. While being transported in the rear of a police service vehicle, Kresi reportedly attempted to escape by jumping from the moving vehicle on a stretch of road between Larabanga and Mognori. The fall rendered him unconscious.

Authorities promptly transported the suspect to St Ann’s Hospital in Damongo for medical attention. However, he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body has since been deposited at the hospital's morgue for preservation and autopsy as investigations continue.

Search for Evidence and Accomplice

Following Kresi’s death, police efforts to recover the weapon he claimed was hidden at his residence proved futile. A subsequent visit by a team from the Regional Police Intelligence Directorate (RPID) to Yerezori yielded no results. According to the deceased’s wife, Ajarah Kadija, an individual believed to be Kresi’s accomplice—identified as Berra—had visited their compound the previous night and removed an unspecified item.

The police have stated that investigations are ongoing to apprehend Berra and recover the missing items, including the weapons allegedly used in the robbery.

 Ongoing Investigation

This incident underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in combating armed robbery and organized crime. While significant progress was made with Kresi’s arrest and confession, the escape attempt and subsequent death of the suspect have complicated efforts to recover critical evidence.

Authorities are now focused on locating Berra, who is believed to be in possession of key exhibits tied to the case. The police have assured the public that they remain committed to bringing all individuals involved in this criminal act to justice.

As this investigation unfolds, it serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement personnel and suspects alike during high-stakes operations. The tragic loss of life underscores the importance of adhering to stringent safety protocols during suspect transport and custody.

Further updates on this case will be provided as new developments emerge.
