Man Killed, Five Injured in Armed Attack by Illegal Miners in Western North Region

A tragic incident unfolded on Monday, May 18, 2026, at the Afao Hills Forest Reserve near Sefwi Asawinso ‘A’ in the Western North Region, resulting in the death of a 38-year-old man and injuries to five others. The attack occurred when a community taskforce confronted a group of suspected illegal miners engaging in unlawful activities within the forest reserve.



The deceased, identified as Kwame Ayisi, was part of a team led by the Odikro of Sefwi Asawinso ‘A’, Nana Kwesi Ayim III. The group had ventured into the forest reserve to address concerns regarding ongoing illegal mining operations. According to a statement issued by the Public Affairs Directorate of the Western North Regional Police Command on Thursday, the confrontation escalated, leading to a violent attack by the miners, who were reportedly armed with guns and cutlasses.


During the altercation, five members of the taskforce sustained injuries from gunshots and cutlass wounds. Tragically, Kwame Ayisi was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Anhwiaso Community Hospital, where the injured individuals were also receiving medical attention. The hospital has confirmed that the injured are responding positively to treatment. Meanwhile, Ayisi’s body has been deposited at the hospital morgue, pending an autopsy.


The Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Divisional Police Command was alerted to the incident around 3 p.m. on the same day. A team led by the District Commander and the Divisional Crime Officer promptly visited the hospital to initiate investigations into the matter.


As part of ongoing efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice, the police have apprehended one suspect, identified as Isaac Badu, also known as "Obede." He is currently in police custody and assisting with investigations. Authorities are actively pursuing other individuals believed to have been involved in the attack.


The Regional Police Command has called on members of the public to refrain from resorting to violence in resolving disputes and has urged anyone with relevant information about the incident to come forward and assist with investigations. Additionally, the command has assured residents that security measures have been instituted to maintain peace and order in the affected communities.


This incident highlights the ongoing challenges posed by illegal mining activities in Ghana, particularly their impact on local communities and natural reserves. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to addressing these issues and ensuring that justice is served.
